Quantum hacker’s suitcase. Optical part of the eavesdropping setup

The suitcase contains Eve’s copy of Bob’s photon detection unit and a faked-state generator. The latter consists of many components mounted on an optical breadboard: 9 semiconductor lasers (roughly 800 nm wavelength, fiber-coupled), polarization controllers, variable attenuators, 2x2 fused fiber couplers. On the lid, control electronics for the faked-state generator is mounted.

This picture from Full eavesdropping on quantum cryptography gallery and Quantum hacking lab gallery is included in Picture Collection on Photo Pages.

Taken on June 30, 2010 in Trondheim, Norway. Here the original configuration from the experiment was recreated for a studio shot for the Gemini magazine.
Medium-format camera with a high-res digital back, studio flash system.
